The first time Isabella Delgado Reyes realized that Andrew Charles Sublett was really in love with her was when the two were having lunch together on February 17, 2010 at the University of California, Berkeley. Get her a small tube of M & M’s, her favorite candy.
She gave it back to him right away, but not because she didn’t appreciate the gesture.
It was Lent and Mrs. Reyes had given up sweets. She said, “I thought he was just kidding me, and he threw an M&M at him again, much to his confusion.”
The two, both now 32, met on August 26, 2009 in Ms. Reyes’ bedroom. “It was a bit of a twist of fate,” said Mr. Sublett. “A few other people from my high school went to UC Berkeley and one of them happened to be Isabella’s roommate.”
Mrs. Reyes and Mr. Sublett hit it off instantly, and soon began spending time together, sitting with each other at lunch in the university cafeteria and going out for frozen yogurt.
“I think they were casual dates,” Mr. Sublett said. “We were sometimes cuddling. She would meet me after choir rehearsal and we would walk to Yogurt Garden.”
Finally, during the fall semester of their senior year in college, they went on a real date. I kind of asked Isabella, “Would you like to go to dinner with me and see a show?” We’re both wearing some kind of clothes. It just felt like a real date.” After dinner, they watched “The Normal Heart” at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco.

This real date led to a real love story. “After our first official date, in my opinion, we were already a couple,” said Ms. Reyes. “But Andrew didn’t officially ask me to be his girlfriend until a few months later on March 18th, 2013.”
Ms. Reyes, of Benicia, Calif., is an associate at law firm Seyfarth Shaw in the San Francisco office. She has a BA in Political Science and Media Studies from the University of California, Berkeley and a law degree from the University of California, Los Angeles College of Law.
Mr. Sublett is Vice President of Eastdil Secured, a real estate investment banking firm, in the San Francisco office. He holds a BA in Urban Studies from UC Berkeley and an MBA from UC Berkeley Haas School of Business. Mr. Sublett grew up in Pacific Grove, California.
On their eight year anniversary of being officially boyfriend and girlfriend, Mr. Sublett tells Mrs. Reyes that they will be engaged to their ninth anniversary. But the day before that date, Ms. Reyes said, “my friends were worried because he didn’t say anything and they were sure they would get involved.”
Mr. Sublett said he did not trust his secret would remain. “I told my close friends,” he said, “but none of her friends.”
On March 18, 2022, as they were walking to their anniversary dinner from San Francisco’s Pacific Heights neighborhood, they passed Mr. Sublet’s favorite San Francisco venue, which has expansive views of the city and the Bay. “I said, ‘Hey, it’s your favorite place,'” said Ms. Reyes, “and when I turned around, he was down on one knee.”
The couple married on June 10 at the Floral Conservatory in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park with 130 guests in attendance. Matthew Cabarat, appointed by American Marriage Ministries, with Brandon Cypress taking part in the ceremony; Both men are college friends.
The recommended outfit for the wedding was “Met Gala-inspired,” or as Mr. Sublette puts it, “something you’ve always wanted to wear but thought it was just too much.”
Mrs. Reyes’ father, Peter Reyes, and her brother, also Peter Reyes, wore an embroidered shirt popular in the Philippines.
Pork baos and famous Filipino ice cream flavors Oop and Mango are served as an homage to Mrs. Reyes’ Filipino heritage.
For their vows, Mrs. Reyes sings “For Good” from the musical “Wicked”.
“I originally wanted to sing our vows,” she said. “He didn’t want to do that.”
The compromise was to enunciate the lyrics to “This I Promise You” from “N Sync” in the style of the group’s “Repeat After Me”. “But then I just started singing,” Ms. Reyes said. “He joined me and we moved on. Nothing like this will happen again.”
