If only Susan Sontag were alive today to rewrite her famous “camp” notes, she might have had a field day at the premiere of “Barbie,” which took place at the Shrine Auditorium in LA on Sunday night (and, for all we know, , probably depicted in the movie — apparently everyone else on Earth appeared in the trailer). If the movie’s message is that we are all Barbie and Barbie we are all, then the pink carpet has done a good job of reinforcing that message (at least that’s what the cryptic trailers suggest, but we’re not sure, since no screeners were provided).
Would Mrs. Sontag have taken the event seriously enough? Many attendees praised the plastic icon plate and smooth skin, but this is par for the course in Hollywood. Sure enough, Mattel was pleased with the brand’s carnival.
After a cavalcade of YouTube personalities and influencers like David Dobrik, stars like Greta Gerwig and Issa Rae arrived head-to-toe in pink. Cast members like Helen Mirren and Will Ferrell didn’t even appear on the carpet — a shame, because Mr. Ferrell sure would have looked dressed up as Barbie. Alas.

At first, Mr. Gosling seemed like a distant choice to star as Kane. But he does an overwhelming job of embodying the role.
